Transform unused square footage into the most versatile room in your home. Caliber Contracting designs and builds finished basements across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Paris — from family rooms to legal rental apartments.
A finished basement isn’t just extra square footage — it’s the most cost-effective way to add functional living space to your home. Whether you need a family room, home theatre, home office, guest suite, or legal rental apartment, your basement has the potential to become the most versatile room in the house.
Basement renovations come with unique challenges that above-grade rooms don’t: moisture management, waterproofing, ceiling height constraints, egress requirements, and HVAC integration. Our engineering background means we understand these issues at a structural level and design around them from day one.
We serve homeowners across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Paris who want a basement that feels like a natural extension of their home — not an afterthought.

Open-concept living spaces with integrated entertainment systems, wet bars, and custom built-ins. Designed with proper lighting, acoustics, and finishes to feel like a natural part of your home.
Dedicated entertainment spaces with acoustic treatment, dimmable lighting, custom seating platforms, and wiring for projectors or large-format displays.
Sound-insulated workspaces with dedicated electrical circuits, proper lighting for video calls, and climate control independent of the main house.
Code-compliant rental units with separate entrance, full kitchen, bathroom, egress windows, and fire separation between units. Designed to meet Ontario Building Code and local zoning requirements.
Self-contained living areas with bedroom, bathroom, and kitchenette for visiting family or multi-generational living. All the privacy of a separate space with the convenience of being in the same home.
Interior drainage systems, sump pump installation, vapour barriers, and proper insulation strategies for below-grade walls. The invisible work that makes everything else last.
Basement renovation costs in the KW region typically range from $40,000–$70,000 for a basic finishing (framing, drywall, flooring, paint, basic lighting) to $80,000–$150,000+ for a full renovation with bathroom, wet bar, custom built-ins, and premium finishes. A legal basement apartment conversion typically costs $60,000–$120,000.
Yes, in most cases. A building permit is required if you’re adding a bedroom (egress window requirements), adding a bathroom (plumbing), creating a secondary suite (fire separation, separate entrance), or doing any electrical work beyond simple fixture replacement. Caliber manages the entire permit process.
Proper moisture management is the foundation of any basement renovation. We assess each basement individually and implement the appropriate combination of: interior drainage tile, sump pump, vapour barriers, rigid foam insulation on foundation walls, and dehumidification. We never frame and drywall over a moisture problem — we solve it first.
Ontario Building Code requires a minimum ceiling height of 6 feet 5 inches (1.95m) for habitable rooms in a basement. Many older homes have basements below this height. In some cases, underpinning (lowering the basement floor) is an option, though it adds significant cost ($50,000–$100,000+). We can assess your basement and advise on feasibility.
